Our successes

The ESA BIC Harwell was established in December 2010. STFC Innovations has a strong track record of successfully supporting entrepreneurs and start-up companies with their business ventures.

Thruvision Systems Ltd (link opens in a new window) manufactures security screening products which exploit terahertz imaging technology developed for the Star Tiger project, a collaboration between ESA and STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. These innovative products work by collecting low energy terahertz waves, a natural thermal energy that is emitted by all people. They can detect explosives, liquids, narcotics, weapons, plastics and ceramics hidden under clothing and can image both metallic and non-metallic threat objects concealed on still or moving subjects, without revealing body details and also without radiating the person with energy.

Microvisk Technologies (link opens in a new window) was spun out from STFC’s micro and nanotechnology capabilities. The company is using a tiny MEMS system created for nano-robots in space to develop micro electro mechanical sensors which will improve the management and ease of testing for monitoring patients’ Warfarin treatment for the international medical market.
